Elmar Walter

Elmar Walter (born January 31, 1979 in Traunstein ) is a German musicologist , conductor , composer and musician .

Life

Walter took recorder lessons at the age of six . The accordion was added at the age of nine . In 1992 he started playing the tuba , in 1994 he learned the Styrian harmonica . He attained after secondary education degree at the Reiffenstuel Secondary School Traunstein (training toward technology) in 1997 at the Technical School Traunstein the college entrance . As a temporary soldier , he became a member of Army Music Corps 12 in Veitshöchheim . In May 1998 he was transferred to Air Force Music Corps 1 in Neubiberg near Munich . During this time he began his first studies in bass tuba with Tom Walsh ( Munich Philharmonic ) at the Richard Strauss Conservatory in Munich .

In 2000 he enrolled at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg . From 2006 to 2009 he did his doctorate there in musicology. On March 11, 2010, he was awarded the Doctor of Philosophy for "Wind and Wind Music. Music between folk music, folk music, military music and art music ”(Tutzing 2011) awarded. At the same time, Walter was employed from October 2004 to September 2008 as tuba player and registrar in the Mountain Music Corps , which is stationed in Garmisch-Partenkirchen .

Act

Since 2008 he has been the head of the folk music department of the Bavarian State Association for Home Care e. V., Munich. Among other things, he works there as editor of the magazine “Volksmusik in Bayern”. He also writes specialist articles focusing on musicology, musical folklore and music education . In addition, he appears as a speaker at advanced training courses, courses and working groups. His research focus is on traditional popular music.

Walter has been leading the semi-professional Schabernack wind orchestra since 2003 , with which he has released five albums. Since 2010 he has led the Jung-Traunwalchen brass band. In the meantime (2013) the orchestra has founded its own association called "Musikkapelle Nussdorf im Chiemgau". Furthermore, he has been the chairman of the Orff '95 eV association since 2013

Due to his position at the Bavarian State Association for Homeland Care, he is a member of the music advisory board of the Bavarian State Ministry for Science, Research and Art, as well as chairman of the “working conference of full-time, nationally active folk music nurses and researchers in Bavaria” and chairman of the working group “musicians-friendly inn”.

Prizes and awards

Walter is the holder of the "Carl Orff Medal" of the Orff '95 e. V., with which he was honored by Lieselotte Orff, the composer's widow, in 2000. On January 10, 2015, he received the Sudetendeutschen Landsmannschaft award for music.
