Belmont Park Racecourse

Elmont is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of Hempstead in the US state of New York with 33,198 inhabitants (2010).

Elmont is located on Long Island , about 20 kilometers east of central Manhattan . The John F. Kennedy International Airport is eight kilometers to the southwest. The Cross Island Parkway touches Elmont in the west.

history

In 1650, Christopher and Thomas Foster acquired lands on Long Iceland and operated on the fertile meadows ( meadows ) primarily agriculture, especially cattle and sheep , and called the place Foster's Meadow . This name lasted for 200 years. After a regional reform, the place was renamed Elmont in 1882. With the construction of a horse racing track in 1905, the place gained a huge boom. Due to its proximity to New York City , Elmont is also valued by commuters as a quiet residential area.

Belmont Park

Elmont is home to the Belmont Park racecourse , where the Belmont Stakes are held every year , the final race of the Triple Crown . The facility was named after the German-American banker and politician August Belmont and his son August Belmont junior , who planned and financed the construction of the racetrack.

Demographic data

In 2010 a population of 33,198 people was determined, which corresponds to an increase of 1.7% compared to 2000. The average age in 2010 was 36.1 years, slightly below the value in New York, which was 38.2 years. 20.2% of the current population are due to immigrants from the West Indies . Other significant immigrant groups during the early days of the town came from Italy ( 18.2%) , Germany (6.3%) and Ireland ( 5.7%) .
