Elroy is located in southwest central Wisconsin on both sides of the Baraboo River , which is part of the Mississippi River basin over the Wisconsin River .

In 1851 the first whites settled on the site of today's city. In 1872 the place got connection to the railway network, which increased the population considerably. In 1879 the settlement was incorporated as the Village of Elroy . The elevation to the "City" took place in 1885.
