Emilian "Emil" Hurezeanu (born August 26, 1955 in Sibiu ) is a Romanian author , publicist , political scientist and ambassador .

Life

Studies and early journalism

Between 1975 and 1979 Emil Hurezeanu studied law at the Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj . In 1976 he became editor of the magazine " Echinox " and in 1978 editorial secretary. He published poetry and literary criticism together with other well-known publicists such as Marian Papahagi , Ion Vartic , Ion Pop and Mircea Zaciu . He was also a founding member of the Ars Amatoria theater group and starred in various parodies of communist leadership. After completing his studies, he published the collection of poems Lecția de anatomie ("The Anatomy Lesson ") in 1979 , with which he received the Prize of the Writers' Union for the best debut. Hurezeanu began his career as a legal advisor in ten villages around Sebeş . He worked there for a year and briefly worked in a bookshop in Sibiu in 1981 . In 1981, Ana Blandiana , who won the Herder Prize , awarded a scholarship to the magazine "Echinox". Hurezeanu was nominated by the editorial team for the scholarship. He then applied for a job as a lawyer in Mediaș in order to be able to get a passport. After receiving it, he went to Vienna on November 1, 1982 .

Political asylum in Germany and work at Radio Free Europe

His scholarship ended after two semesters. Hurezeanu moved to Munich and worked from 1983 to 1996 as an editor at Radio Free Europe . His first contribution described the life of the gypsies in Romania . He also translated articles from Geo magazine . In October 1983, Hurezeanu received political asylum in Germany . He made further contributions to political issues and after the death of Emil Georgescu , Hurezeanu took over his position in the Romanian Current Affairs department . He became a specialist advisor for various broadcasting companies in Europe . In 1985 he received a scholarship from the University of Virginia . There he studied political science . After returning to Germany, he continued to study at American universities in Europe. He received a Masters Degree in International Political and Strategic Relations from Boston . His activity abroad angered the Securitate , the Romanian state secret service, which monitored his family in Romania for several years. His mother was sent to Germany twice to persuade him to return to Romania, or at least not to write against the communist regime . Hurezeanu refused and in April 1989 signed a joint call for the liberalization of cultural life in Romania.

After the Romanian Revolution , Hurezeanu returned to his homeland in 1990 and took part in the protests on University Square in Bucharest . He remained employed by Radio Free Europe , where he became head of the Romanian department in the spring of 1994. In January 1995 he moved to Cologne , where he worked as head of the Romanian department at Deutsche Welle and published other political texts. In June 1995 Radio Free Europe was relocated to Prague, Hurezeanu stayed with the station as an employee.

Return to Romania

In 2002 Hurezeanu returned to Romania. He worked for the Romanian television station Antena 1 , where he produced and hosted five seasons of the talk show România mea ("My Romania"). Since 2005, together with Cristian Tudor Popescu, he has produced the political talk show Cap & Pajură (“ Heads and Tails ”) on Realitatea TV . He also made other radio contributions for Europa FM . There he produced the program Interviews for Europa FM .

In March 2003 he became foreign policy advisor to the then Romanian Prime Minister Adrian Năstase . But he resigned from this office after six months.

On May 5, 2015, he was appointed Romanian ambassador to Berlin by President Klaus Johannis .
