Emily Jacir

Emily Jacir (born 1970 in Bethlehem , West Bank ) is a Palestinian- American artist. She works conceptually and has become known as a painter, photographer, film, sound, video and installation artist . Her work revolves around the history of the displacement , oppression and killing of Palestinians .

life and work

Jacir was born in Bethlehem in the Israeli-occupied West Bank in 1970. She grew up in Saudi Arabia and attended high school in Rome . She obtained a BA from the University of Dallas in Irving (Texas) and a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) from the Memphis College of Art in Memphis (Tennessee ). Since 1999 Jacir has lived and worked, as long as the Palestinian Autonomous Area is not cordoned off, alternately in Ramallah ( working at the University of Bir Zait , among others ) and in New York City .

Since 1994 Jacir has had a variety of exhibitions around the world, including at the Whitney Museum and MoMA in New York and at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art . In 2007 she took part with Material for a Film , "a documentary film in the form of an installation" about the murder of Wael Zwaiter , a. a. participated in the Biennale di Venezia and was awarded a Golden Lion. In 2008 Jacir was awarded the US $ 100,000 Hugo Boss Prize from the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation .
