Life

Emma was the daughter of Henrik Munktell (* 1804 in Kopparberg; † 1861), owner of a paper mill that his grandfather Johan Munktell founded in 1740 and which he took over in 1834. He was also a talented amateur musician, both pianist and conductor, and a member of the Harmoniska Sällskapet in Stockholm . The mother was Christina Augusta, nee Eggertz (* 1818 in Falun , † 1889 in Stockholm).

When the father died, the mother moved to Stockholm with Emma, son Henrik (1841–1906) and daughters Amalia (1846–1916) and Helena (1852–1919). From here she ran the paper mill and ran a salon that was mainly frequented by musicians. In Stockholm Emma first studied painting privately with August Malmström , then at the art academy . She then stayed in Düsseldorf for study purposes , where Malmström had already studied in 1856/57 and worked in Hans Fredrik Gude's studio in 1858 . Like the teacher, she traveled to Rome and Paris , where she rented a studio and trained privately with the painters Gustave Courtois and Pascal Adolphe Dagnan-Bouveret . Here she was friends with the Norwegian painter Marie Kathrine Helene Tannaes (1854–1939), who studied with Courtois in 1885 and 1888.

In 1870 she married the portrait and history painter Carl Freiherr von Sparre (1839–1910) and took on the nobility title “Friherinna” (baroness). In 1867 Sparre had been a private student of Ferdinand Fagerlin in Düsseldorf and then worked in Paris. The marriage was divorced in 1891. Their daughter Märta, married Améen (* 1871 in Vienna ; † 1940 at Gut Barksäter near Norrköping), made a name for herself as a painter and illustrator.

Emma Sparre returned to Sweden around 1890 and had the Solgården house on Lake Siljan in Dalarna built in 1897 based on a design by her son-in-law's cousin, Gustaf Améen (1864–1949). Here she was visited by many famous guests, among them Selma Lagerlöf and Anders Zorn .

As a painter, Emma Sparre chose her motifs from fairy tales and legends, but increasingly turned to landscape and especially portrait painting. A composition of her sister Helena, "Isjungfrun" (The Ice Maiden), opus 20, 1889, wrote for Emma Sparre the libretto, also has a counterpart in her painting "Isdrottningen" (The Snow Queen), which in 1893 at the World's Fair in Chicago shown has been. She also wrote texts for the composition "Jul" (1913) and for some of her sister's songs. The cover of the 2005 CD with the orchestral works by Helena Munktell is illustrated with a landscape painting by her sister.
