Emma Tahmizian

Emma Tahmizian (also Emma Tachmizjan, born December 13, 1957 in Plovdiv ) is a Bulgarian - American pianist .

Life

She grew up as the youngest daughter in an Armenian family. Her ancestors had fled to Bulgaria during the First World War and settled in Plovdiv . She got her first piano lessons at the local special school for music with Penka Petkova . At the age of 8 she already won the first prize at the National Festival for Instrumentalists of Bulgaria and at the age of 11 represented her country at a festival for contemporary music in Moscow . In 1975 she began studying piano at the State Conservatory in Sofia with Julia Ganev and Konstantin Ganev . At the same time, she successfully took part in master classes and international piano competitions.

An extensive concert activity u. a. with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra , the Moscow Philharmonic and the Leningrad Philharmonic , she has traveled to many countries in Europe, Asia and America.

In 1985, after taking part in the International Van Cliburn Piano Competition , she moved to the USA and continued her studies at the Juilliard School in New York with Adele Marcus .

In addition to numerous concerts, as a soloist, with orchestra and in various chamber music ensembles, she has taught at Lawrence University , Wisconsin and on master courses such as the " Bowdoin Summer Festival ".

The New York composer Sebastian Currier dedicated several works to her, including his first piano concerto , which she premiered in April 2007 .
