action

Italy in the early 1950s. Five children, whose parents perished in World War II, live in the dilapidated basement of an old apartment building . One night Virgola, the youngest of them, discovers several boxes in an adjoining room, all of which are filled with 1,000 lire bills . The boys, who have become infinitely rich in one fell swoop, decide not to reveal their secrets to any adult, but soon realize that they cannot do without an adult to manage the money and shop for them. So they take Mario, a pickpocket, into their midst. Although Mario was originally only after and stealing from the boys' money, the children's sincere affection and trust transforms him into a better person. He is now going out of his way to break away from his seedy and criminal cronies in order to start a new life. Then he and the children become secret benefactors. They help and give gifts to the poor, the elderly and, above all, the city's children. After all, they leave all the money to hospital nuns. After Mario was able to break away from his past, he marries an acquaintance of the children. Everyone is happy and satisfied now.

Reviews

16 years after the making of the film, the Protestant film observer summarized his criticism as follows: “Italian fictional film made in 1952, which was certainly well-intentioned, but whose maudlin plot and precocious dialogues seem embarrassing and mendacious as entertaining. Superfluous. ”The lexicon of international films only notes that it is an award-winning, exciting children's film. Moviepilot.de is full of praise : "A meticulous and realistic staging, paired with the adorable play of the young leading actors and the incomparable score by Nino Rota [...] make this film an unforgettable experience for young and old."
