action

Cartoonist Michael Koller and his wife, the actress Hanna Koller, live a carefree life with their son Patrick until their daughter Pauline is born with a severe physical disability due to a medical malpractice . Pauline needs help day and night, and when she turns six, her parents have to prove to an expert that she can use an electric wheelchair and is allowed to go to school. Due to the difficult private situation and professional failures, father Michael turns to alcohol more and more. His wife is on the verge of a nervous breakdown due to her care for the daughter and has little time for her husband. The two begin to grow apart. Eventually they split up, but an accident in which son Patrick is seriously injured brings the family back together.

background

Screenwriter Werner Thal and his wife, the leading actress Corinna Beilharz, deal with their personal life situation as a family with a severely disabled daughter in this film.

criticism

“The dramatic (television) film with plenty of room for humor and (self-) irony demonstrates how much strife with fate can obscure one's view of true values. Well played, with differently drawn figures and lifelike dialogues, convince above all through the atmospheric gray and intermediate tones of a creeping alienation. "

continuation

In 2007 the film received a sequel with The Shine of the Stars .
