Engler's beech ( Fagus engleriana ) is a species of beech ( Fagus ) in the beech family (Fagaceae). Their distribution area is in the south and east of China .

Engler's beech grows as a deciduous tree that can reach heights of up to 25 meters.

The leaves are arranged alternately on the branches. The hairless petiole becomes 0.5 to 1.5 centimeters long. The simple leaf blade is egg-shaped, elliptical-egg-shaped or rarely elongated-egg-shaped with a length of 5 to 11 centimeters with a wide-wedge-shaped to rounded blade base and a pointed tip. It is hairless with the exception of the leaf veins, which are silky hairy on the blue-green colored underside of the leaf . From the main vein there are nine to 14 side veins on each side, which are curved upwards. The leaf margin is bulged.

Engler's beech is single-sexed ( monoecious ). The flowering period extends from April to May.

The 1.5 to 1.8 cm long fruit cups (cupulae) are on a 2 to 7 cm long stem. The slightly protruding beechnuts have three small wings at the top. The beechnuts ripen from August to October.

Distribution and location

The natural distribution area of ​​Engler's beech is in south and east China. It includes Anhui , North Guangxi , South Guizhou , Henan , Northwest Hubei , Hunan , Shaanxi , East Sichuan , Yunnan and Zhejiang .

You can find them at altitudes from 1500 to 2500 meters. It inhabits mainly deciduous and mixed forests that grow on mountain slopes.

Systematics

Fagus engleriana was 1900 by Ludwig Diels in Botanical year books of Systematics, plant history and geography of plants , pp 285-28, 29 (2) first described . He attributed the name to Karl Otto von Seemen . A synonym for Fagus engleriana Seemen is Fagus sylvatica var. Chinensis Franchet .
