The 1996/97 season was the first edition of the English English League . After the Ice Hockey Superleague and the British National League , this was the third division of British ice hockey this year. In addition to the English teams, a Welsh team took part.
Mode and participants
The teams played in regional groups, a North Conference and a South Conference . In a single round everyone played against everyone. The first four of each group then played against each other for two places for the final round. There, the overall winner was determined in play-offs with two legs.
