from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Enoch Svantenius , called the Elder or II. , Latinized from Enoch Schwante (* February 18, 1618 in Güstrow , † July 30, 1674 in Rostock ) was a German Lutheran theologian and university professor.

Life

Enoch Svantenius (Schwante) was born as the son of the eponymous pastor Enoch Svantenius (I.) at the parish church in Güstrow and studied theology at the universities of Rostock and Greifswald from 1634. In 1646 he became a deacon at the Jakobikirche in Rostock. In 1647 he received his master's degree in Rostock on the same day as his brother Johannes, who was pastor at the village church in Lüssow . On the same day he married his wife Katharina, a daughter of the Rostock theologian Johann Tarnow . In 1650 he took up academic teaching alongside his ecclesiastical office and in 1652 was promoted to Dr. theol. PhD. In 1653 he rose to the position of archdeacon at the Jakobikirche . In 1668 Svantenius was appointed city associate professor of theology at the University of Rostock and the following year full ducal professor of theology.

His larger-than-life pastor's picture in the Jakobikirche in Rostock was destroyed with this church.

The educator Enoch Svantenius (III., The younger) was his eldest son.

Individual evidence

  1. ^ The date of birth follows Gustav Willgeroth , Die Mecklenburg-Schwerinschen Pfarren since the Thirty Years' War. Volume 3. Wismar 1926. S. 1409. - In the literature there are sometimes different dates of birth, such as January 15, 1618 or January 25, 1618 or the year 1616, which is definitely wrong.
