Enoch Detlef Hartwig Zander (born June 19, 1873 in Zirzow , † June 15, 1957 in Erlangen ) was a German zoologist , beekeeper and beekeeper . It was through him that scientific research into honey bees in Germany achieved world renown .

Life

Enoch Zander was the son of the same name farmer and Gutspächters of Zirzow in Neubrandenburg , Enoch Zander (* 1847) was born and spent his childhood in Schmachthagen and from 1883 in Waren (Müritz) , where in 1893 he at the Municipal High School graduated. In 1893 he began studying botany at the University of Erlangen , but soon switched to zoology. In 1895 he continued his studies at the University of Kiel , 1895/96 at the University of Rostock . In 1896 he received his doctorate in Erlangen and was employed as an assistant at the zoological institute.

In 1899 he stayed to study at the " Zoological Station " set up by Felix Anton Dohrn in Naples . In 1903 he accepted a position as an assistant at the Institute for International Marine Research at Kiel University. There he completed his habilitation as a private lecturer in zoology.

Although he was also interested in marine biology, he turned to the little-explored bees. In 1907 he became scientific director of the newly founded Royal Institute for Beekeeping in Erlangen . In 1909 he received an extraordinary professorship at the University of Erlangen and in 1910 he became director of the institution. In 1927 he succeeded Albert Fleischmann as full professor and general manager of the State Institute for Beekeeping, which had been renamed since 1918. In 1935, Zander was elected to the Leopoldina . He retired in 1937. During the Second World War , he took over a chair again in 1942, and his final retirement took place in August 1948.

Enoch Zander wrote about 500 papers on apology. He constructed together with the beekeepers Johann Merz zander prey , which experienced a large spread in Germany. He made important contributions to determining the sex of bees as well as researching and combating bee diseases. In 1909, for example, he discovered the Nosema pathogen , an intestinal disease of the honey bee that had not been determined until then and was named after him as Nosema apis zander . He developed an exemplary method for breeding queens and introduced queen breeding in Germany. Enoch Zander was the first to use pollen analysis to determine the origin of honey . To this end, he extended his research to the bee pasture and also examined the forest costume . On the occasion of his 70th birthday in 1943 he was honored with the Goethe Medal for Art and Science . He later received the Federal Cross of Merit . In October 1952 he was elected honorary chairman of the German Society for Applied Entomology. The German Beekeeping Association honored him with the appointment of honorary beekeeper .

Enoch Zander was married to Elisabetha Jacob († 1946) since 1913. At his own request, he was buried on July 5, 1957 in Waren (Müritz).

In 1964, the Bavarian Beekeepers Association donated the medal “For special merits” ( Zander Medal ) in his honor .
