The Epic Balta is a liquid gas tanker sailing under the flag of Singapore . The ship is owned by the York Maritime Company. The ship, which was then sailing under the name York , was hijacked by Somali pirates in the Indian Ocean in October 2010 .

history

The tanker was built in 2000 under hull number 517 at Higaki Shipbuilding in Imabari , Japan . The keel was laid on February 18th, the launch on March 27th, 2000. The completion of the ship, which came under way as York , took place on June 28, 2000.

The ship, which was previously managed by the Greek shipping company Interunity Management Corporation (IMC) in Athens , joined the fleet of the Singapore-based shipping company Epic Gas in the 2010s and was renamed Epic Balta .

Pirate attack in October 2010

The tanker was hijacked by Somali pirates on October 23, 2010 around 50  nautical miles from the Kenyan port city of Mombasa on the way from there to Mahé in the Seychelles . In addition to the German master, there were a total of 16 crew members on board . 14 seafarers are from the Philippines and two from Ukraine . The ship sent out a distress signal at 14.25  CEST . Soldiers of the Turkish frigate Gaziantep involved in the anti-pirate mission Atalanta reported after a helicopter flight that armed pirates were on the deck of the fully loaded gas tanker.

Almost 24 hours after the attack, the German captain contacted the manager company in Greece . The tanker was moving north towards Somalia .

On March 10, 2011, the York was released after paying an unknown ransom.

Technical specifications

The ship is powered by a two-stroke - six-cylinder - diesel engine with 3,900  kW power driven. Four diesel generators with 945  kVA apparent power are available for power generation.
