Vegetative characteristics

The rose-red fireweed is a perennial , herbaceous plant and reaches heights of 30 to 60, rarely 15 to 100 centimeters. It has a short rhizome and only forms one stem. It has no runners when it is in bloom. In autumn it forms short renewal shoots at the root neck, which form leaf rosettes. The stem is angular and has two to four raised longitudinal ridges. The lower part of the stem is often bare, the upper part is branched and has simple hairs and protruding glandular hairs attached to it.

The leaves are arranged opposite to each other up to the inflorescence and are divided into a petiole and a leaf blade. The leaf stalks are 2 to 10 millimeters long. The simple leaf blade is 3 to 8 millimeters and 1 to 3 centimeters wide, ovate-lanceolate, pointed at both ends and the leaf edge 1 millimeter long teeth. The leaf margin and the nerves are hairy, the nerves protrude from the underside.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period is between July and September or October. The inflorescence axis is densely covered with glandular hairs. The hermaphroditic, relatively small flowers are radial symmetry and four-fold with a long tube. The axis cup is covered with glandular hair on the surfaces, the edges are hairy adjacent. The sepals are 3 to 3.5 millimeters long. The crown is funnel-shaped and has a diameter of 4 to 6 millimeters. The crown is initially whitish and later turns light pink. The petals are 4 to 7 millimeters long and have deep margins. The upright style ends in a keuligen scar . There is self-pollination .

The capsule fruit is 4 to 7 centimeters long, densely gray-haired and has glandular hairs on the surfaces. The seeds are about 1 millimeter long, obovate with a blunt base. The seed coat is finely papillary .

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 36.

Occurrence

The rose-red fireweed occurs in Central Europe in damp locations, widespread on the banks of streams and in ditches. It thrives best on seeping, often lime-rich, rather humus-rich loam and clay soils . It's a nutrient pointer . It rises up to the montane, rarely up to the subalpine altitude . In Tyrol it rises to altitudes of 1350 meters.

In terms of plant sociology, it is a species of the Convolvulion sepium societies in Central Europe , but also occurs in the Filipendulion and Sparganio-Glycerion fluitantis.
