Schlumbergera truncata (German: Christmas cactus or limb cactus ) is a species of plant in the genus Schlumbergera from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The German Cactus Society , the Society of Austrian Cactus Friends and the Swiss Cactus Society voted Schlumbergera truncata 2014 “Cactus of the Year”.

Schlumbergera truncata grows epiphytically or rarely lithophytically with richly branched shoots . The clipped, shiny green shoot sections are 4 to 6 inches long and 1.5 to 3.5 inches wide. At their edges there are two to three slight notches in which there are areoles with brown wool and tiny bristles. The terminal areole is compound.
The zygomorphic , pink or red, orange or white flowers are slightly rising. They are 6.5 to 8 inches long and reach 4 to 6 inches in diameter. The flower tube is up to 4 inches long. The reddish green pericarpel is smooth. The pear-shaped fruits are red and smooth.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Schlumbergera truncata is distributed in Brazil in the state of Rio de Janeiro at altitudes of 700 to 1000 meters.
The first description as Epiphyllum truncatum was published in 1819 by William Jackson Hooker . Reid Venable Moran (* 1916) placed them in the Schlumbergera genus in 1953 .
In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Vulnerable (VU) ", d. H. listed as endangered.
