The Erdbach , also called Ernsbach in the upper course , is a 7 kilometer long right tributary of the Mümling in the Odenwald , which probably gave the name to the city of Erbach and the district of Dorf-Erbach .

Upper course

The Erdbach rises in the Buntsandstein-Odenwald about 600 meters northeast of the location of the Erbach district of Ernsbach , flows west through this place and strives to unite with the only noteworthy tributary, the Erbucher Bach coming from the south . Up to this point he is also known under the surname Ernsbach . This is followed by the last section, known as the Dreiseetal , leading through forest area before the stream reaches Dorf-Erbach.

Erdbach infiltration

Between Dorf-Erbach and Stockheim , the stream is opposed by a ridge made of shell limestone , which protrudes into the Mümling valley and over which the Eulbacher Straße leads. Here, near the Erbacher Sportpark, the Erdbach seeps away completely in five cave holes of a river shrinkage at the foot of a small rock face.

The limestone layers of the overburden , long removed from the surrounding mountain ranges of the Odenwald, escaped weathering in places due to the lowering of the Michelstädter Graben . A pending clod of the lower shell limestone has remained here. The solubility of the lime due to the carbonated water led to the formation of cracks and crevices that widened over time. This also resulted in more or less large underground cavities. As a result, the water falls into the depths and emerges again as springs at a suitable point.

As measurements with color additives have shown, the water reappears after three quarters of an hour and an infiltration distance of about 100 meters north on the other side of the karst ridge, hidden in a wood near the Stockheimer mill . The water gushes out of pool-like widenings at the foot of the slope.

A second arm of the Erdbach already leads above Dorf-Erbach to a point where the water used to disappear in a 10-meter-deep shaft underground and the height of which was used by an ivory carving to drive the machines. After the machines are shut down, the water from this tributary is caught in two canal inlets on a meadow and channeled underground to the lower infiltration point. The water from the upper infiltration point was underground for 23 hours before it emerged from the Stockheimer Mühle . This suggests a distinctive system of passages with lakes that cave explorers have already been able to walk over a length of approx. 400 meters. The Erdbach cave system, as one of the largest karst phenomena in the southern Hesse region, forms an impressive and rare geological natural monument .

Lower course

Below the Stockheimer Mühle, the stream bed forms the border between Stockheim, which is on its right bank, and the district of Erbach. The last 350 meters from the crossing under the federal highway 45 to the confluence with the Mümling, the Erdbach is channeled underground.
