Erdmute Sommerfeld (2019)

Erdmute Sommerfeld , née Klein , (born March 31, 1943 in Bartnig, Silesia ) is a German physicist and professor of theoretical psychology . She is a recognized Klix student and specializes in cognitive psychology .

Career

Erdmute Klein was born in Bartnig as the daughter of the farmer Siegfried Klein and his wife, the welfare worker and nurse Erna Klein. After the Second World War, which took place resettlement of the family in the Mark east of Berlin . Here she attended elementary school in Langsow (Mark) from 1949 to 1957 and then the Extended High School (EOS) in Seelow (Mark), where she graduated from high school in 1961 .

This was followed by studies at the Technical University "Otto von Guericke" Magdeburg , which she graduated in 1966 with a diploma in physics . The Magdeburg physics education goes back to Ernst-Joachim Gießmann - rector and later Minister for Higher Education and Technical Education , whose term of office also included the Third University Reform of the GDR.

In 1979 she received her doctorate as Dr. rer. nat. at the Academy of Sciences of the GDR with a dissertation on the topic "Analysis and Synthesis of problem-solving processes." In 1993 habilitated it relates to the field of "Mathematics and psychological analysis of cognitive structures" at the Humboldt University of Berlin (HUB).

Erdmute Sommerfeld has been married to the physicist Rudolf Sommerfeld since 1965 and lives in Berlin. The couple has a son.

Research and teaching

After graduation, she got at the Technical University "Otto von Guericke" in Magdeburg a postgraduate . She interrupted this for two years after the birth of her son in 1967.

She then worked from 1969 to 1990 at the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin (DAW), renamed the Academy of Sciences of the GDR (AdW) after the academy reform was completed in 1972 (President: Hermann Klare , then Werner Scheler ). Here she was at the newly founded Central Institute for Cybernetics and Information Processes (ZKI founding director: Horst Völz , then Volker Kempe ) in the areas of "Basics of Cybernetics", "Artificial Intelligence" and "Psychology" in the "Problem Solving Processes" department founded by Friedhart Klix active (Head: Werner Krause ).

From 1985 until the beginning of the winding up of the Academy of Sciences in 1990 she was head of the department "Mathematical Modeling and Simulation of Cognitive Processes". Then she headed the "Mathematical Psychology" project group within the framework of the Scientist Integration Program (WIP). She was a visiting professor at the universities of Jena , Bochum , Braunschweig and Leuven ( Belgium ). From 1993 she was employed as a senior scientific assistant at the Institute for Psychology at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena .

In 1994 she was offered a lectureship in "Methods of Psychology" at the University of Leipzig and in 2003 was appointed Associate Professor .

In 2004 she was elected as a member of the Leibniz Society of Sciences in Berlin .

Research priorities

  • Theoretically oriented cognitive psychology, with a focus on "Mathematical-psychological elementary analysis of human information processing"

Sommerfeld has developed a model approach to systematize and formalize cognitive processes (collaboration with Werner Krause and Fred Sobik ). Her approach is detailed in her book “Cognitive Structures”. This systematization of cognitive processes is based on the claim to completeness. In this way, she has made a contribution to a “theoretical psychology” that will be established in the future. Based on this, she was able to present for the first time a completeness analysis of the set of universal processes of human information processing (according to Klix: universals in human thinking ), which Klix established through its evolutionary development and whose requirement relevance and invariance he demonstrated experimentally (Klix, 1992, Klix & Lanius , 1999). She underpinned the theoretical framework she created through experimental analyzes using psychophysical and neuroscientific methods (collaboration with Werner Krause, Tobias Dörfler, Anke Hensel, Katharina Köhler, Michael Köhler, Franziska Kopp, Simone Malotinsky, Bärbel Schack and Andrea Simmel).

  • Simplicity as a principle of action, knowledge and design

On this topic, Sommerfeld founded the working group “Principle Simplicity” in 2010 together with Herbert Hörz and Werner Krause at the Leibniz Society of Sciences in Berlin, in which an interdisciplinary group of scientists researches and discusses the following question: “Is simplicity a universal principle the effect, a universal principle for recognizing and a universal principle for design in the most diverse disciplines of science? If so, in which functions, structures, processes, rules or laws and under which conditions does such a principle express itself? ”. To this end, together with Herbert Hörz and Werner Krause, she published two meeting reports of the Leibniz Society on this subject.
