Life

Erich Fenninger was born in Bad Vöslau in 1963. After graduating from high school , he completed training as a social worker at the Federal Academy for Social Work in Vienna . On his further education he studied social work science and organizational development at the Academy for Social Work of the City of Vienna and the St. Pölten University of Applied Sciences . From 1985 Fenninger worked as a social worker. From 1991 to 2003 he was managing director of Volkshilfe Niederösterreich . Since 2003 he has been the federal manager of Volkshilfe Austria and a member of boards and supervisory boards of various Volkshilfe sub-companies. Since 2016 Fenninger has been chairman of the social economy Austria, the largest employer organization in the private social and health sector in Austria. During his term of office, there were several strikes over the issue of reducing working hours .

From 1996 to 1997 Fenninger was the federal chairman of the Young Generation Austria , a youth organization of the SPÖ . From 2010 to 2018 he was a member of the ORF Public Council. From 2014 to 2017 he was also a member of the ORF Board of Trustees and head of the so-called SPÖ "Circle of Friends". In June 2015 he founded the SPÖ-internal initiative Kompass with the mayor of Traiskirchen , Andreas Babler , representatives of the freedom fighters and the socialist youth , which is supposed to serve as a platform for the left wing of the party.

In the course of the ongoing refugee crisis , Fenninger initiated "solidART for refugees" in September 2015, an initiative by artists and intellectuals. As the first action of this project, Volkhilfe organized a large solidarity concert for asylum seekers on October 3rd, 2015 with the title " Voices for Refugees - Solidarity Concert for a Human Europe " on Heldenplatz in Vienna . Die Toten Hosen , Zucchero , Konstantin Wecker , Bilderbuch and Conchita Wurst performed as live acts at the concert . It was visited by over 100,000 people with free entry.

To protest against the redesign of social welfare, Fenninger spent eight days in a tent in various state capitals . At the end of his Austria tour, Fenninger stayed overnight in Vienna and called for a rally against changes in the minimum income, which, however, with only 150 to 200 people, came with far fewer participants than expected.

Fenninger is particularly involved in the areas of child poverty and human rights . He is also a member of the scientific advisory board for social work at the St. Pölten University of Applied Sciences .
