The FH Campus Wien is the largest university of applied sciences in Austria . It offers Bachelor 's and Master' s courses as well as advanced training courses organized in seven departments: Applied Life Sciences; Technology; Building and designing; Administration, economy, security, politics; Health sciences; Applied nursing science and social affairs. The FH Campus Wien is located in Favoritenstrasse in the 10th district of Vienna , Muthgasse in the 19th district (at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna ), on the Vienna BioCenter campus and at Laudon Castle in the 14th district.
Foundation and development
The FH Campus Wien is a university of applied sciences that was created in 2001 by merging two universities of applied sciences (FH Bau / Camillo Sitte Lehranstalt and Campus Favoriten). At that time, the two diploma courses Technical Project and Process Management and Civil Engineering - Construction Management were offered. In the autumn of 2002 the “Academy for Social Work of the City of Vienna” and the “Federal Academy for Social Work in Vienna” were integrated and the offer was expanded to include five diploma courses. In 2003, the part-time FH degree in bioengineering started at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences .
The organization was initially a "maintainer of FH courses", in summer 2004 it received the status of a university of applied sciences. In spring 2007, the training of the upper medical-technical services (MTD) and midwives of the city of Vienna was transferred to the FH Campus Wien. Previously, the training courses were organized by the Vienna Hospital Association (KAV) in the form of academies. The bachelor's degree programs were offered by the FH Campus Wien from autumn 2007, but initially remained at their previous locations at five Viennese hospitals. In the academic year 2009/10, the locations were merged from 14 to 4 by relocating to the newly built FH building in Favoritenstrasse 226 in the 10th district of Favoriten, Vienna .
The bachelor's degree in bioengineering and the master's degree in bioinformatics, biotechnological quality management and bioprocess engineering are located at Muthgasse 62 in the 19th district at BOKU. In addition to expanding the joint location to become the Vienna Institute of Biotechnology (VIBT), the FH Campus Wien cooperates closely with the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in the field of research and further education.
The Public Management department is located at Schloss Laudon - Oktogon in Mauerbachstrasse 43 in the 14th district. The Public Management course was developed in cooperation with the Federal Chancellery, Tax Management with the Federal Ministry of Finance.
The Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Molecular Biotechnology are located on the Vienna Biocenter campus, one of Austria's most important research locations. With over 1,400 employees from over 40 nations, internationally recognized scientists do research at the Biocenter, equipped with the most modern laboratories and the most advanced technologies. The spatial and structural embedding of the bachelor's and master’s degree program promotes the networking of training and research. In addition, due to the strong practical relevance, the students receive in-depth laboratory experience during their studies.
Management and rectorate
The university management of the FH Campus Wien consists of the management, which is responsible for the strategic and business management, and the rectorate, which is responsible for the academic management of the university. In January 2012, Arthur Mettinger was elected Rector to succeed Heinz Schmidt , who took up his position on March 1, 2012.
On November 4, 2015, the college of FH Campus Wien elected Barbara Bittner as chairwoman and thus rector. She succeeds Arthur Mettinger in this role, who is taking a break due to illness. In spring 2012 Roswitha Engel was elected Vice Rector for Teaching, while Heimo Sandtner was Vice Rector for Research and Development. Wilhelm Behensky is the chairman of the executive board and Horst Rode acts as CFO.
General information about the FH degree
Bachelor and master courses
From the 2006/2007 academic year, FH Campus Wien switched all courses to the Bachelor-Master system. Since then, they have consisted of a basic course and at least one post-graduate course. The duration of study for bachelor courses is six and for master courses four semesters. These regular studies are organized either full-time or part-time. As is customary in the Austrian FH sector, they are financed by state funding for university places.
Advanced training courses
Several advanced training courses are set up at the FH Campus, which, in accordance with the regulations of the University of Applied Sciences Studies Act, conclude either with an academic expert title or - for courses that are comparable to foreign master’s programs - with a master’s degree. Further education programs are financed by cost-covering tuition fees.
Academic degrees and other degrees
The bachelor's and master's degrees customary in Austria are obtained in the regular studies, each with an addition describing the degree. The advanced training courses conclude with academic expert degrees or master’s degrees.
ECTS credits
As at all Austrian universities of applied sciences, the ECTS system has been implemented.

The Bachelor's degree programs offered by the Applied Life Sciences Department conclude with the academic degree Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BSc) or Bachelor of Science in Natural Sciences (BSc) and comprise 180 ECTS credits. The master’s courses are completed with the receipt of 120 ECTS credits.
Depending on the course of study , the training focuses include chemistry , molecular biology , biochemistry , cell biology , measurement and control technology , pharmaceutical technology and quality management .

The Department of Building and Design includes two Bachelor and two Master courses. In addition, the academic course and the master’s course in technical building equipment are offered.
In the Civil Engineering - Construction Management bachelor's degree, the focus is primarily on technology and construction. The "sister course" Green Building focuses on the design and planning of future-oriented buildings. The duration of the bachelor’s course is six semesters. They each comprise 180 ECTS credits and conclude with the academic degree Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BSc).
In the master’s degree courses, in-depth knowledge of the handling of international construction projects and sustainable and ecological aspects in the construction industry are imparted. The study duration for the master’s courses is four semesters and includes 120 ECTS credits.

In 2007, the upscale medical-technical services (MTDs) and midwives started as bachelor's programs with new study regulations . Before that, they were run as the Academies of the City of Vienna.
The courses in advanced medical-technical services (MTDs) and midwives are carried out by the FH Campus Wien in close cooperation with the Vienna Hospital Association (KAV).
The Bachelor programs of the Department of Health are completed with the academic degree Bachelor of Science in Health Studies (BSc) and the receipt of 180 ECTS credits. The Master’s degree in Health Assisting Engineering is offered part-time. The course lasts four semesters, comprises 120 ECTS credits and concludes with a Master of Science in Natural Sciences (MSc) degree.

The Bachelor's degree in Social Work can be completed part-time or full-time within a study period of six semesters with the academic degree Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences (BA). The professional field includes youth welfare , drug counseling , work in assisted living communities and women's shelters, assistance to offenders or urban and regional development .
The Bachelor's degree in Social Management in Elementary Education will be offered for the first time in Austria from the 2014/15 winter semester and is aimed at trained kindergarten teachers with professional and management experience. The admission requirements include the matriculation and proficiency test for kindergarten teachers, four years of relevant professional experience in a day-care center, including at least one year of managerial tasks and the completion of the provider-specific training program for managerial functions.
In the Department of Social Affairs, the master’s courses in social space-oriented and clinical social work as well as social economy and social work can be studied. Within four semesters, these offer a scientifically sound training with a high degree of practical relevance, comprising 120 ECTS credits.

The three-semester master’s course in technical building equipment conveys practice-oriented knowledge of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and electrical systems with low-energy and passive house standards . He graduates with the academic degree Master of Sciences in Building Services Engineering (MSc) and the receipt of 90 ECTS credits.
In the academic course in construction and renovation technology for the real estate industry, real estate professionals acquire the knowledge they need to assess the structural condition of a building and find the best solution for ecological and cost-effective renovation. The course lasts two semesters and comprises 60 ECTS credits.
The academic course in technical building equipment concludes with 60 ECTS credits and includes practical training with coordinated content that covers all areas of building services with a focus on sustainability .

The Master’s course in Leadership, Politics and Management offers a training concept that is unique in Austria and focuses on political management. Comprehensive management expertise for all fields of political and civil society action is imparted within four semesters.
Research, initiatives and partnerships
In addition to practice-oriented training, numerous research and development projects are carried out. The Vienna Institute for Safety & Systems Engineering (VISSE) specializes in the development of safety-relevant systems. The focus is on the areas of system and functional safety, system theory and the associated engineering disciplines. As a result, new insights and new knowledge in the development of systems, methods, tools and processes are gained, which are made available to a large number of companies and institutions.
A dedicated team of experts for IT security gets to the bottom of questions about tap-proof and manipulation-proof data transmission . Organizationally integrated into the information technology and telecommunications course, the competence team is available to the courses at the FH Campus Wien. The main research areas are, among other things, relevant for the risk and weak point analysis of points of attack on IT systems, encryption and authentication procedures, electronic trace and evidence protection as well as copy protection procedures .
In July 2012 the OS.Car-Racing-Team was founded at the FH Campus Wien. Under the direction of Vice Rector Heimo Sandtner, students of technical courses - mainly high tech manufacturing - take part in the Formula SAE . The Formula SAE is an international design competition between students from different universities. The aim is to design, construct and build a single-seat racing car within a year.
Various projects in the applied life sciences make a significant contribution to research and development. For example, the Bioengineering department is positioning itself as a cooperation partner for industry with the FHplus project METORGANIC in the field of white biotechnology.
The Biotechnology Department conducts research at the interface between applied research and basic research. In coordination with the thematic areas of the pharmaceutical industry, the signal pathways of the cell and cell-based test systems form the focus of the research projects. In addition to the two-hybrid system, the research team at the FH Campus Wien also deals with the detection of protein-protein interactions. The researchers are also working with the Technical University of Munich on the application of magnetic nanoparticles for induced expression. As an in vivo test system, they use the “fish” model system, which is ideally suited as a genetic system for a variety of analyzes in the field of molecular medicine.
The FH Campus Wien is networked with companies, organizations, universities and other public institutions as well as with partner schools. FH Campus Wien cooperates with: Medical University of Vienna , Montanuniversität Leoben , Technical University of Vienna , University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences , University of Vienna , University of Veterinary Medicine . Internationally, it currently has Europe-wide partnerships with around 100 educational institutions.
