Voices for Refugees (subtitle: Solidarity Concert for a Human Europe ) was a solidarity concert for asylum seekers organized by the Austrian welfare organization Volkshilfe and the concert organizer Nova Music Entertainment on October 3, 2015 at Heldenplatz in Vienna . It was visited by over 100,000 people with free entry.

The solidarity concert

The background for the solidarity concert was formed by the political and civil society events surrounding the refugee crisis in Europe in 2015 . October 3, 2015 developed into a refugee day of action in Vienna, on which various smaller and larger events took place to draw attention to the refugee situation. The solidarity concert Voices for Refugees on Heldenplatz in Vienna was the main event of the day. The Viennese police said there were 100,000 to 120,000 visitors, the organizers said there were 150,000 visitors. The concert was broadcast live by the television station Puls 4 . In cooperation with the Vienna State Opera , a live stream was also offered at voicesforrefugees.com and puls4.com. More than half a million people followed the concert via TV broadcast and around 15,000 via the web stream.

Voices for Refugees was organized by Volkshilfe , one of the five largest Austrian welfare organizations . Cooperation partners were the aid organizations Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund , Caritas Austria , Diakonie Austria , Hilfswerk Austria and the Austrian Red Cross . Other supporters included the Kinderfreunde , the ÖGB , the Integrationshaus Wien and the City of Vienna. The concert organizer Ewald Tatar, managing director of Nova Music Entertainment GmbH , which also organizes the rock music festival Nova Rock , took over the organization and handling of the concert .

According to the organizer, the title Voices for Refugees should stand on the one hand for the voices of the performing artists and on the other hand for the voices of the people who attended the concert. Another aim of the event was to “send a signal against inhumanity, for respect and esteem in dealings with one another and especially with the refugees” and to give a voice to those “whose screams are not heard”.

The stage at Heldenplatz measured 34 by 14 meters. Around 100 employees were required for the construction and 30 articulated lorries were required for the material used. The concert started at 4:30 p.m. and lasted until 11 p.m. The highlight and main act of the concert were Die Toten Hosen . The following musicians and artists also performed:

Raoul Haspel called for a minute's silence for what, according to him, "more than 25,000 dead in recent years at the EU's external borders". In addition, the journalist Susanne Scholl , the actor Harald Krassnitzer , the Federal Managing Director of Volkshilfe, Erich Fenninger , and the Austrian Federal President Heinz Fischer appeared as speakers.

“What people in need need is care and understanding. We mustn't turn away. "

- Heinz Fischer : From the speech at the Voices for Refugees concert, October 3, 2015

The police spoke of 20,000 participants, the organizers of 70,000. As part of the demonstration, the Mariahilfer Straße was pasted 300 meters with 2,100 posters showing refugees and helpers.
