Erich Schmid (physicist)
Erich Schmid (born May 4, 1896 in Bruck an der Mur ; † October 22, 1983 in Vienna ) was an Austrian physicist and contributed significantly to the clarification of questions about crystal plasticity.
Life
Schmid studied physics and mathematics at the University of Vienna , did his doctorate in 1920 with Felix Ehrenhaft and then became an assistant to Ludwig Flamm . In 1951 he accepted an appointment at the University of Vienna and stayed there until his retirement in 1967.
According to him, this is schmidsche shear stress law named. In 1935, together with Walter Boas, he published the very successful textbook crystal plasticity with special attention to metals . The Austrian Academy of Sciences awarded Schmid the Erwin Schrödinger Prize in 1960 for his life's work and named their Institute for Materials Science after him. He was also awarded the Austrian Decoration for Science and Art . In 1965 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . In 1971 he received the Ring of Honor of the City of Vienna . Since 1971 he was also a corresponding member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences . He was an honorary doctor of the Montan University Leoben and the Technical University of Clausthal .
A street is named after him in his hometown of Bruck an der Mur .
Gero Vogl (PhD 1965) is one of his students .
