Erich Weise (born September 4, 1895 in Krefeld , † April 10, 1972 in Hanover ) was a German historian and archivist .

Life

Erich Weise was born in Krefeld and grew up in Königsberg in Prussia . Since von Weise's mother came from the Baltic States , his father, the high school professor Julius Weise, had himself transferred to the East Prussian capital. After completing his school education, he began studying at the Albertina in Königsberg. He was surprised by the outbreak of the First World War in Mitau , the then capital of Courland (today Jelgava in Latvia ) and was interned in Russia for three years , which resulted in him being hard of hearing and finally deaf. After his return and the end of the First World War, he continued his studies and passed the state examination for teaching at secondary schools in 1921, which he was unable to take due to his illness. In the same year he did his doctorate as a historian under Albert Brackmann .

He embarked on an archival career. His professional stations were initially Berlin (1922–1927), Düsseldorf (1927–1930) and Königsberg i. Pr. (1930-1935). In 1933 he became a member of the NSDAP . In 1935, Weise was appointed State Archives Councilor; later he worked as a department head, for example at the Secret State Archives in Berlin (1935–1939) and in Warsaw (1939–1942); In 1942 he took over the management of the newly established Posen Reich Archives . After the Second World War he came to the Prussian province of Hanover , which opened up in 1946 first in the state of Hanover and then in the state of Lower Saxony , where he set up the Stade State Archives on a voluntary basis . In 1948 it went to the Hanover State Archives . From 1959 until his retirement in 1960 he was Director of the State Archives in Stade.

During his time in Warsaw he removed all so-called “non-Aryans” and “politically unreliable” persons from the archives in the General Government of Poland. He directed the confiscation of all archive materials in the areas annexed by the German occupation. However, he initially spoke out against a large-scale relocation and organized its inspection. After the war, the Polish government made restitution claims on some of the seized archival material, including valuable medieval documents on the foreign relations of the Teutonic Knights.

His main research interests as a historian and archivist were the history of Prussia and the Teutonic Order . He published a. a. "Numerous source editions and representations in the elaboration of the history of the medieval Teutonic Order of Prussia". During his retirement he continued to work as an author and as a private scientist. He was married and, with the help of his wife, was able to take part in scientific conferences, despite his hearing impairment, where he “often made important, sometimes even contentious contributions”.

Erich Weise died at the age of 76 in Hanover, where he had taken up residence with his family a few years after the Second World War.

Afterlife

Most of Erich Weise's professional legacy is archived at the Lower Saxony State Archives (NLA) - Stade State Archives , primarily his manuscripts and material collections on scientific work and archival problems.
