Erich Wernicke (doctor)
Erich Arthur Emanuel Wernicke (born April 20, 1859 in Friedeberg , Neumark , † May 25, 1928 in Berlin ) was a German immunologist , hygienist and microbiologist , especially a bacteriologist .
Life

Wernicke attended the community school and the Progymnasium in Friedeberg from 1865 to 1876 and the grammar school in Landsberg an der Warthe from 1876 to 1879. He studied from 1879 to 1883 at the Medical and Surgical Friedrich Wilhelm Institute in Berlin. In 1880 he did his military service and was active in the Pépinière-Corps Suevo-Borussia. In 1883 he took his Rigorosum exam and worked as a junior doctor in Alsace. In 1884 he completed a year-long service at the Charité. The Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität zu Berlin graduated him in the year of his state examination in 1885 as Dr. med.
From 1895 to 1890 he worked as a junior doctor and assistant doctor in Mühlhausen and Karlsruhe, then as an assistant at the Hygiene Institute in Berlin, where he and Emil Behring developed the first therapeutic serum against diphtheria in 1890 . In the same year Wernicke became a medical officer. In 1894 he completed his habilitation in Berlin for hygiene and bacteriology and in 1895 he was transferred to the military medical training institutes as head of the hygienic-chemical laboratory, which at that time was renamed the Kaiser-Wilhelms-Akademie.
In 1896 he received the title of extraordinary professor and in 1897 he became Emil Behring's representative in the management of the Hygiene Institute at the University of Marburg .
In 1898 he was also a medical officer at the central administration of the Hesse-Nassau province . During his short time in Marburg he was involved in local politics as a member of the Marburg city council.
In 1899 he was appointed director of the Königl. Hygiene Institute moved to Poznan , promoted to senior staff physician, 2nd class, appointed senior staff doctor, 1st class and medical adviser in 1901, and in 1903 associate professor at the newly founded Medical Academy in Poznan ; From 1905 to 1908 he was rector of the academy. From 1914 to 1916 Wernicke worked as a consultant hygienist on the Eastern Front. After Posen fell to re-established Poland as a result of World War I , he was commissioned in 1921 to set up a medical investigation office in Landsberg an der Warthe . He retired in 1925 as director of the Hygiene Institute in Landsberg and then worked as a volunteer at the State Institute for Water, Air and Floor Hygiene in Berlin-Dahlem until 1928.
Wernicke was admitted to the Goldener Plow Masonic Lodge in Berlin on December 12, 1894 ; During his time in Marburg he participated as a “visiting brother” and lecturer in the work of the local lodge Marc Aurel zum Flammenden Stern .
Wernicke died at the age of 69. His grave is located in the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Cemetery , Fürstenbrunnerweg 69–79, D1 Git 15. Until 2014, it was dedicated to the city of Berlin as an honorary grave .
