Erik Anstine

Erik Anstine (* in Eugene , Oregon ) is an American opera singer ( bass ).

Life

Erik Anstine studied at Northwestern University in the US state of Illinois ; there he graduated with a Bachelor of Music . During his studies at Northwestern University he also spent a year at the Royal Academy of Music in London . He received a Masters of Music from Indiana University . Bassist Timothy Noble was one of his teachers . In the 2007/2008 academic year he sang the advice of Crespel in Hoffmann's Tales at Indiana University at a student performance. He won the Orpheus Singing Competition, took part in the Thomas Quasthoff Lied Competition in Berlin in 2009 and in the Queen Sonja Music Competition.

In 2010 he took part in the Castleton Festival ; he sang the notary in Gianni Schicchi . He also jumped in on short notice as Mr. Peachum in John Gay's A Beggar's Opera . In the 2009/2010 and 2010/2011 seasons he was a member of the Seattle Opera studio . As part of the Seattle Opera's Young Artist Program, he sang Truffaldino in Ariadne auf Naxos in 2010 and Don Alfonso in Così fan tutte and Leporello in Don Giovanni in 2011 . In 2011 he also made his debut on the Seattle Opera Grand Stage as Second Priest in Mozart's opera The Magic Flute .

In the 2011/12 season he was a member of the Domingo-Thornton Young Artist Program of the Los Angeles Opera . As part of the program, he sang Hauptmann in Eugene Onegin , Brother Jean in Roméo et Juliette and - under the direction of James Conlon - in the opera Der Kaiser von Atlantis as part of the "Recovered Voices" series on the stage of the Los Angeles Opera the Los Angeles Opera. In summer 2012, Anstine was a member of the Santa Fé Opera studio as part of The Santa Fé Opera Apprentice Program . He appeared there as Archbishop in Karol Szymanowski's opera King Roger and as Sciarrone in Tosca .

From the 2012/13 season to the end of the 2015/16 season, Anstine was a permanent member of the ensemble at the Zurich Opera House . There he performed in the 2012/13 season a. a. Sciarrone, Bartolo in Le nozze di Figaro , Biterolf in Tannhäuser , Second Soldier in Salome , Kulygin in Three Sisters by Péter Eötvös , Masetto in Don Giovanni , Second Knight of the Grail in Parsifal and the roles of the servant in the new production of the opera Lady Macbeth from Mtsensk . In the 2013/14 season he appeared as Wagner in Faust , Melisso in Alcina , as Antinoo in Il ritorno d'Ulisse in patria and as a night watchman in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg .

In July 2014 he sang the bass part in a performance of the Mass in C major by Ludwig van Beethoven in the Tonhalle Zurich . In October / November 2014, Anstine appeared as Leporello in Don Giovanni at the Seattle Opera. In the summer of 2015 and 2016 he sang the role of the gardener Antonio in the opera Le Nozze di Figaro at the Salzburg Festival . In the 2015/16 season he made his debut at Zurich Opera House as Colline in La Bohème . In June 2017 Erik Anstine debuted at the San Francisco Opera as Leporello in Don Giovanni at the side of Ildebrando D'Arcangelo in the title role. In spring 2018 he also sang the Leporello at the Edmonton Opera.

The American website BARIHUNKS ® ( The Sexiest Baritone Hunks from Opera ), whose blog is devoted to physically well-built baritones who present their well-defined torso to portray their opera roles, was introduced to their readers in March 2011 by Anstine. In March 2013, BARIHUNKS ® presented Erik Astine with a Barihunk T-shirt on a skiing holiday in the Swiss Alps .
