Ermesinde II of Luxembourg (July 1186 - February 12, 1247 ) was Countess of Luxembourg , la Roche and Durbuy from 1197 to 1247. She was the only daughter of Henry IV , also known as "Henry the Blind", Count of Luxembourg and Namur with Agnes von Geldern, daughter of Heinrich I von Geldern .

Life

"Heinrich the Blind" had chosen his nephew Baldwin V of Hainaut as his successor before she was born . Her birth, however, called this succession into question.

To protect her, her father betrothed her to Henry II , Count of Champagne, when she was two years old .

She spent much of her youth in France.

For his part, Baldwin V did not renounce the inheritance that was promised to him, and after a war the emperor had to settle the disputes. So then the county of Namur Balduin was assigned, the counties of Durbuy and la Roche went to Ermesinde, and the county of Luxembourg was assigned to Otto I of Burgundy.

Heinrich II, who planned to take part in the third crusade , renounced the engagement, and Ermesinde married Theobald I (1158-1214), Count of Bar. This negotiated with Otto von Burgundy that he renounced the county of Luxembourg, thus she became Countess of Luxembourg.

Theobald also tried to regain Namur, but was unsuccessful and had to give up. This waiver was recorded in the Treaty of Dinant of July 26, 1199.

The descendants of Theobald and Ermesinde were:

  • Renaud, Lord of Briey, died before 1214
  • One daughter, died 1214
  • Elisabeth († 1262), married to Walram Herr von Monschau († 1242).
  • Margarethe, married to Hugo III. († 1243), Count of Vaudémont, later with Henri de Bois, who was regent of the county of Vaudémont .

Theobald died on February 13, 1214, and Ermesinde, 27 years old, married Walram IV (* ~ 1175, † 1226), Duke of Limburg , in May 1214 .

From this marriage 3 children were born:

  • Heinrich V called Heinrich the Blonde (1216–1281)
  • Gerhard Count of Durbuy († 1276)
  • Katharina († 1255), married Matthew II († 1251), Duke of Lorraine in 1229 .

Walram tried again unsuccessfully to regain Namur; the definitive waiver of this was recorded in a new Treaty of Dinant of March 13, 1223.

Widowed for the second time, she managed Luxembourg for another 21 years, first supported by Walram von Monschau and then by her own son Heinrich V.

By her death in 1247, she had tripled the county in size. At that time, their prudent rule made Luxembourg a flourishing region. So she had given various cities charter, including Luxembourg and Echternach .

She also led a very religious life and built several monasteries, including the Clairefontaine Abbey near Arlon , where she found her final resting place like her son Henry the Blonde, and her grave can still be visited today.
