Ernst Gadermann

Ernst Gadermann (* 25. December 1913 in Ronsdorf ; † 26. November 1973 in Hamburg ) was a German medical officer , last Oberstabsarzt the Air Force of the Armed Forces . He became famous in the Second World War , when he was a gunner of Hans-Ulrich Rudel this on February 8, 1945 after the wounded and emergency landing before bleeding to death saved.

Life

Gadermann joined the Air Force in 1941, where he served as a group and squadron doctor in Sturzkampfgeschwader 2 on the Eastern Front . In addition to his medical work, he soon served in the squadron staff . Later he was also an observer and gunner in the III. Group of his squadron and from May 1944 permanently assigned to the crew of Hans-Ulrich Rudel. On October 17, 1943, he was awarded the German Cross in Gold and on August 19, 1944, he was the only doctor in the Air Force to be awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross after more than 600 combat missions in the air force . On February 9, 1945, his machine was shot down by an anti-aircraft gun near Lebus . After the emergency landing, he saved Rudel from bleeding to death after a severe lower leg injury. Gadermann himself then served at an air inspection agency in Braunschweig until the end of the war. In total, Gadermann flew over 850 combat missions.

After the war Gadermann worked as a cardiovascular specialist in Hamburg. It was there in 1947, together with Adolf Metzner, that he developed the basics of the first telemetric measurements of the EKG in athletes. In 1972 he was the sports medical director at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich . Gadermann died of a heart attack on November 26, 1973 . He was buried on December 7, 1973 in his hometown of Wuppertal.

Reception and criticism

At the medical academy of the Bundeswehr , next to the Auditorium Maximum named after Hans Scholl , there is a memorial wall with knight's cross bearers of the medical service, on which Gadermann is also listed.
