The Ernst Haeckel was a fishing research ship of the German Democratic Republic . The ship was named after the German zoologist Ernst Haeckel .

history

The ship was built at VEB Mathias-Thesen-Werft Wismar for the institute for deep sea fishing and fish processing in Rostock - Marienehe . It was delivered and put into service on May 17, 1963. From May 22nd to 31st, 1963 it was presented to the public at the International Fisheries Exhibition in London .

Technical data and equipment

The ship was driven by a father-and-son engine system. The father engine was a four-stroke cycle - eight-cylinder - diesel engine (type: 8 SV 55v) with 920 hp power , the son of a four-stroke engine six-cylinder diesel engine is (type: 6 SV 44v) of 500 hp. The manufacturer of the engines was VEB Görlitzer Maschinenbau. Both engines acted on a fixed propeller via a gearbox .

Two diesel generators were available for the power supply . A four-stroke six-cylinder diesel engine (type: 6 NVD 36) with an output of 300 hp, which drove a generator (type: GCED 722-5) with an output of 200 kW, was available to supply the on-board network at sea. A four-stroke six-cylinder diesel engine (type: 6 NVD 26) with an output of 180 hp was used for port and emergency operations, which drove a generator (type: GCED 455 / 7.5) with an output of 100 kW. A net winch generator with 250 kW power was connected to the main drive between the son engine and the gearbox.

The ship was designed as a full-decker with two continuous decks , the upper deck and the freeboard deck below. The side height up to the freeboard deck was 6.20 meters, up to the upper deck 8.50 meters. The hull was reinforced with ice . The superstructures were in the middle of the ship. Behind the superstructures on the upper deck was an open working deck with various lifting tools and winches . The fish hold, which was located two decks below, was also accessible from here. The engine room was in the midship area.

The ship had five laboratories for scientific work as well as a drawing room, an on-board weather station and a consultation room. The ship, built as a stern catcher , could not only be used for fisheries research but also for oceanographic research. It had winches for taking water and soil samples and for deploying and retrieving measuring devices.

The ship was able to stay at sea for around 60 days, covering 4,600  nautical miles .
