Ernst Johann Sigismund von Boyen (born July 27, 1730 in Wolka in East Prussia , † June 12, 1806 in Berlin ) was a Prussian general of the cavalry and director of the 6th Department of the War College and Knight of the Black Eagle Order .

Life

Ernst Johann Sigismund was the son of Friedrich von Boyen, Prussian captain in the battalion "Graf Truchses" and his wife Anna Dorothea, née von Radecke.

Military career

Boyen was a cadet in Berlin from August 31, 1743 and was then employed on February 24, 1746 as a non-commissioned officer in the cuirassier regiment "von Bredow" (No. 7) of the Prussian army . On June 8, 1755 he was promoted to lieutenant. With his regiment Boyen took part in the Battle of Lobositz during the Seven Years' War . In the battle of Kunersdorf he was wounded as a captain and squadron chief . After the end of the war he was promoted to major on June 4, 1768 .

Boyen then took part in the War of the Bavarian Succession in 1778/79 . Since May 21, 1781, Lieutenant Colonel , he received his farewell from King Frederick the Great on May 27, 1783 .

In June 1787 he was appointed major general and on June 25th he was appointed director of the 6th Department of the War College (armouring and mooning systems).

In 1791, Boyen was reinstated by King Friedrich Wilhelm II , received the rank of major general and became department director at the newly established Oberkriegskollegium. During this activity Boyen earned merit in the training of snipers in the fusiliers through the introduction of carbine rifles . In 1794 he was appointed lieutenant general and in 1802 general of the cavalry. In 1804 he was appointed Knight of the High Order of the Black Eagle. He died in 1806 and after his death was buried in the old garrison cemetery in Berlin-Mitte.

Ernst von Boyen was married to Maria Elisabeth Philipine von Klitzing (born February 17, 1751 in Demerthin ). The following children were born from the marriage:

  • Ernst Leopold (* 1772; † 1806), died near Auerstedt
  • Gustav Ferdinand Wilhelm Hermann (born August 18, 1776 in Osterburg (Altmark) ; † January 9, 1847), last lieutenant in the "Graf von Anhalt" regiment, later chief forester in Minden, later in Liegnitz
  • Ludwig Wilhelm (* May 21, 1780 in Osterburg; † October 25, 1845 in Bonn ), Prussian Lieutenant General ⚭ Sophie Amalie Karoline von Kottwitz (* June 3, 1790; † June 7, 1852)
  • Albertine
  • Erdmuthe Caroline ⚭ 1796 Count Alexander Samuel Erdmann von Roedern (born January 7, 1853), Lord of Giersdorf and Schönfeld

The later Prussian Minister of War Hermann von Boyen is the son of his brother Johann Friedrich von Boyen (1720–1777).
