Ludwig Wilhelm Otto Karl von Boyen (born May 21, 1780 in Osterburg (Altmark) , † October 25, 1845 in Bonn ) was a Prussian lieutenant general and commandant of the Minden fortress .

Life

His parents were the Prussian cavalry general Ernst Johann Sigismund von Boyen (1730-1806) and his wife Maria Elisabeth Philipine, born von Klitzing (born February 17, 1751).

Military career

Boyen was homeschooled and on September 1, 1793, was employed as a private corporal in the von Raumer infantry regiment of the Prussian Army . He took part in the campaign in Poland in 1794/95 and was promoted to secondary lieutenant by May 1798 . From 1803 to 1804 he graduated from the General War School in Berlin and subsequently joined the General Staff as an adjutant . In the War of the Fourth Coalition fought Boyen in the Battle of Jena and was made inactive after the surrender at Lübeck.

After the war he joined the General Staff on June 20, 1809 as a captain of the staff and from there on December 16, 1811 as an adjutant in the West Prussian Brigade. In mid-February 1812 he was transferred to the Upper Silesian Brigade. On March 6, 1813, Boyen joined the general staff of Major General von Zieten . During the Wars of Liberation he fought in the battles near Großgörschen , Dresden , Kulm , Leipzig and the siege of Erfurt and the battles near Haynau and Nollendorf. Boyen was wounded near Großgörschen and awarded the Iron Cross, 2nd class. For Leipzig he received the First Class Cross, for Nollendorf the Order of St. Vladimir and on March 17, 1815 the Order of St. Anna II. Class.

On May 31, 1815 Boyen was appointed commander of the Jülich Fortress and on June 11, 1815, he was aggregated to the General Staff while remaining in this position . With a patent from October 13, 1815 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel on October 13, 1815 . On March 30, 1820 he became a colonel with a patent from April 8, 1820. In 1825 he received the service cross . On March 30, 1831 he was promoted to major general and transferred to the 15th Infantry Brigade as commander. On August 18, 1837 Boyen was appointed Commandant of Minden and on April 7, 1842 promoted to Lieutenant General. On the occasion of his 50th anniversary in service, King Friedrich Wilhelm IV awarded him the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd Class with Oak Leaves, on August 19, 1843 . On March 8, 1845 Boyen received his farewell with a pension of 3000 thalers. He died shortly afterwards on October 25, 1845 in Bonn.

In 1829 his commanding general von Borstell wrote: “Moral, diligent and punctual in service, good military and scientific knowledge. Much loyalty to duty, recommendable. "

Boyen married Sophie Amalie Karoline von Kottwitz on May 28, 1807 in Berlin (* June 3, 1790 - † June 7, 1852). The couple had several children:
