Ernst Martin (born March 3, 1885 in Schraplau ; † November 12, 1974 in Bad Münstereifel ) was a German theologian and politician (DNVP).

Live and act

After attending primary school in Schraplau and grammar schools in Mannheim and Eisleben , Martin studied theology at the universities of Halle and Berlin . During his studies he became a member of the Germania Halle fraternity in 1904 . For a year he was a member of the 66th Infantry Regiment in Magdeburg . From 1911 to 1912 he worked as an assistant preacher in Hötensleben for the Evangelical Church in the older provinces of Prussia . He then officiated from 1912 to 1918 as pastor in Felgentreu near Luckenwalde. In 1918 he was appointed as a preacher at the Cathedral of St. Mauritius and Katharina in Magdeburg by the Old Prussian Evangelical Church Council. He held this office until his retirement in 1957.

Around 1919 Martin joined the German National People's Party (DNVP), for which he sat for two legislative periods in the Reichstag of the Weimar Republic from May 1924 to May 1928 . In 1933 he joined the NSDAP and its church party, the German Christians . He was excluded from the latter in 1936 after taking sides with the Confessing Church .

As an opponent of communism , Martin constantly warned of the " Bolshevik danger". As an agitator he appeared for national conservative groups and later also for the NSDAP, with which he broke again in the later 1930s due to their interference in "church affairs".
