Ernst Michael Lang

Ernst Michael Lang (born October 16, 1913 in Lucerne ; † October 21, 2014 in Basel ; resident in Lucerne) was a Swiss veterinarian , zoo director and university lecturer .

Life

Ernst Michael Lang, son of the businessman Josef Lang and Anna née Zumbühl, studied veterinary medicine at the University of Bern and the University of Veterinary Medicine in Hanover . In 1939 he received his doctorate in Berne Dr. med. vet.

Lang subsequently managed a veterinary practice in Andermatt and was also used as a place horse doctor for the Swiss Army . From 1942 to 1953 he ran a private veterinary practice in Binningen and worked as a veterinarian at Basel Zoo . In 1953 Lang was elected by the board of directors to succeed Heini Hediger as director of Basel Zoo, a position he held until he retired in 1978. In addition , he completed his habilitation in 1963 at the University of Basel ; from 1972 to 1978 he was associate professor for zoo biology.

Lang was then represented on the board of trustees of WWF Switzerland from 1982 to 1986 . He worked as a consultant in the development and restructuring of zoos, such as those in Singapore and Los Angeles, and was an honorary member of the World Zoo Organization . During his time as zoo director, Lang endeavored to keep animals in a species-appropriate manner, for example in groups. His first successes in breeding include the Indian rhinoceros , gorilla , flamingo and spectacled bear .

Lang served in the Swiss Army with the rank of major , he married Trude, née Beermann, in 1938 († 1996). He later married Imma Gálvez. He died in Basel at the age of 101.
