Ernst Otto Bräunche

Ernst Otto Bräunche (born January 4, 1954 in Ramsbeck ) is a German historian and archivist . From July 1, 1985 to June 30, 2020, he was director of the Karlsruhe City Archives .

Bräunche first attended the elementary school in Ramsbeck, then the Benedictine high school in Meschede . From 1972 to 1978 he studied history and German at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg . He completed his studies with an examination for academic teaching at grammar schools. In 1981 he did his doctorate with Hans Fenske at the University of Freiburg with a study on political parties and Reichstag elections in the Rhine Palatinate from the establishment of the Reich in 1871 to the outbreak of World War I in 1914. From 1981 to 1983 he completed the legal clerkship for school service at grammar schools in Freiburg and from 1983 Until 1985 he completed the archival preparatory service as a trainee lawyer for the state of Baden-Württemberg at the main state archive in Stuttgart and at the archive school in Marburg . After a few months working in the Baden General State Archives , he moved to the Karlsruhe City Archives on July 1, 1985 as director . Since 1998 he has also headed the City History Museums ( City Museum in the Prinz-Max-Palais and Pfinzgaumuseum in Karlsburg Durlach). In 2009 he also took over as deputy head of the cultural office.

In the course of Ernst Otto Bräunche's 35-year term in office, the city archive and historical museums stepped up both publication and exhibition activities. In 1993, the city archive was able to set up a permanent exhibition on the history of parliament and democracy in Baden in the New Ständehaus . He himself wrote numerous articles on the history of Karlsruhe as well as on the history of Baden-Württemberg and was co-editor of four series of publications on the history of the city. Under his direction numerous holdings of the city archive were digitized as well as an extensive online offer (including the city lexicon Karlsruhe and the memorial book for the Karlsruhe Jews).

Bräunche was active in numerous archival bodies. From 2002 to 2018 he chaired the Federal Conference of Local Archives at the German Association of Cities . He was also chairman of the Archive working group in the Baden-Württemberg Association of Cities , on the advisory board for the reconstruction of the Cologne city archive after the collapse and, for a number of years, member of the board of the municipal archives section of the International Archives Council . In addition, he was a member of the Advisory Board of the Baden-Württemberg Cultural Foundation and of the Advisory Board of the “Coordination Office for the Preservation of Written Cultural Assets” (KEK) . In the historical field, he is deputy chairman of the working group for historical regional studies on the Upper Rhine and a full member of the commission for historical regional studies in Baden-Württemberg . He has been a member of the advisory board since 1992 and from 2006 to 2019 he was first deputy chairman of the Southwest German Working Group for Urban History Research.
