Ernst Wally

Ernst Wally (* 1976 in Vienna ) is an Austrian organist and composer .

Life

Ernst Wally attended the Musikgymnasium Vienna and initially studied at the Diocesan Conservatory for Church Music of the Archdiocese of Vienna, where Franz Falter was his organ teacher. Later he studied organ (with Michael Radulescu ), composition (with Dietmar Schermann , Michael Jarrell and Frédéric Durieux ) and church music at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris .

After working as liturgical organist at the Karlskirche in Vienna and as a guest organist at various churches in Vienna, he was appointed to St. Stephen's Cathedral in 2007 , where he initially held the position of cathedral music assistant and was finally appointed full-time organist in 2010 . He has worked several times as an organist in radio and television services.

As a concert organist he has performed in various countries inside and outside Europe . He also worked as an organist several times in productions with the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra a . a. under the direction of Simone Young , Manfred Honeck and Martyn Brabbins . In 2013 he made his debut with the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna and the Wiener Symphoniker with the Symphony No. 3 in C minor, op. 78 (“Organ Symphony”) by Camille Saint-Saëns under the direction of Bertrand de Billy .

His compositional work includes works of various genres in the sacred and secular areas. He created commissioned works a. a. for the Guardini Foundation (Berlin), the Cathedral Music St. Stephan in Vienna on the occasion of the visit of Pope Benedict XVI. , the Carinthian Summer and the cycles “Viennese Organ Concerts” and “Dialogues mystiques” (Vienna). His works have been performed in Austria, Germany , Italy , Finland , Great Britain , Russia , the Czech Republic , Slovakia and Chile .

From 2005 to 2010 Ernst Wally taught composition, composition and organ at the Schubert Conservatory in Vienna . Since 2016, Wally has held the office of cathedral organist at St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna together with Konstantin Reymaier.
