Ernst Weitz

Georg Ernst Martin Weitz (born June 21, 1883 in Pfirt ; † March 2, 1954 in Gießen ) was a German chemist.

Life

Weitz studied chemistry at the Kaiser Wilhelms University of Strasbourg . With a doctoral thesis on phthalaldehyde , he was promoted to Dr. phil. nat. PhD . His doctoral supervisor was Johannes Thiele . In 1909 he passed the examination for the higher teaching degree for the subjects chemistry, physics and mathematics. He habilitated over heavy metals (thallium, mercury, lead) and complex nitrogen compounds of gold , the fulminating gold . In 1915 he received the license to teach chemistry. After the armistice of Compiègne (1918) expelled like all German university professors from Strasbourg, he taught as a private lecturer at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen and the Westphalian Wilhelms University of Münster . In 1921 he was appointed to the chair at the Friedrichs University in Halle . In 1929 he took over a full professorship at the Hessian Ludwig University of Giessen . In 1937 he became a member of the National Socialist German Workers' Party . In the post-war period in Germany, he worked for six semesters as acting director of the Chemical Institute at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main . He played a key role in the reconstruction of the institute that had been destroyed by the air raids on Frankfurt am Main . One of his children was the chemist Hans Martin Weitz; The physicist Martin Weitz and the surgeon Jürgen Weitz are among the grandchildren .

Act

The “NO-Kipp”, a Kippian apparatus for the production of nitrogen oxide, was characteristic of the Weitz laboratory . Weitz carried out numerous work in the interface between inorganic and organic chemistry. From 1934 to 1938 Weitz was chairman of the specialist group for organic chemistry of the Association of German Chemists , from 1938 to 1943 a member of the small council of this association. After 1945, Weitz and Fritz Merck built and refurbished the Liebig Museum in Gießen, which was badly damaged by the war .
