Ernst Westphal

Ernst Westphal , according to other sources Ernst Westpfahl , (born October 20, 1851 in Lübeck , † September 26, 1926 in Berlin ) was a German sculptor and medalist .

Life

Westphal had been running a studio for building sculptures in the house at Lützowstrasse 71 in Berlin-Tiergarten since 1895 at the latest . For house facades and interiors he created reliefs and three-dimensional sculptures , which he executed in stone, but also in bronze . A large part of his works has been preserved to this day and shapes the appearance of Berlin, but also other cities in Germany.

  • 1901: Gravestones for Karl Theodor Liebermann, Albert Hamburger and Max Fabisch (the latter together with the architect Walther Schilbach ) in the Jewish cemetery in Berlin-Weißensee
  • 1901–1905: Carvings for the registry office at the Fischerbrücke in Berlin-Mitte (moved to the wedding room in Pankow town hall in 1979 )
  • 1903: two reclining figures for the building of the Chamber of Commerce (today the Institute for Library Science of the Humboldt University ) in Berlin-Mitte, Dorotheenstrasse 26
  • 1904: sandstone reliefs for the Grünstraßenbrücke in Berlin-Mitte; One relief shows a group of people who helpfully hold out their hands to a drowning person, the other shows women washing and chatting. It is possible that the sculptor was referring to Wilhelm Spindler's laundry, which used to be on the other side of Wallstrasse .
  • 1905: Figures and reliefs for two Wertheim department stores in Berlin ( Leipziger Straße department store and Rosenthaler Straße department store )
  • 1905: Building jewelry at the Berlin School of  Economics in Berlin-Mitte, Spandauer Straße 1 (today the economics faculty of the Humboldt University)
  • 1905–1910: Façade decoration for the Kaiser Wilhelms Academy in Berlin-Mitte, Invalidenstraße (together with Otto Lessing and Albert Manthe )
  • 1910: Plant boxes with reliefs made of terracotta (made by the Imperial Majolica Workshop Cadinen )
  • 1910/1911: clinker brick decor (using Roman and Moorish motifs) on the facade of the Admiralspalast in Berlin, Planckstrasse
  • 1913/1914: Construction sculpture on the administration building of Orenstein & Koppel - Arthur Koppel AG in Berlin-Kreuzberg, Tempelhofer Ufer 23–24 (sculptures lost, building under monument protection)
  • Portal decorations (simple stone ornaments) at the Kaiserin-Auguste-Viktoria-Infant home (other portals by Josef Rauch )
  • Bronze memorial plaque for the mayor of Berlin at the Rotes Rathaus
  • Sepulcher in the style of the Italian Renaissance for the engineer and entrepreneur Carl Hofmann (1836-1916) (architecture of Bruno Schmitz , marble statue of Nicholas Geiger , ornamental decoration of Westphahl; 1991/1992 on behalf of the Historical Foundation churchyards and cemeteries in Berlin and Brandenburg with Help from the German Lottery Foundation restored)
