Architecture and history
The extension building of the Technische Hochschule Darmstadt was built between 1905 and 1908 according to plans by the architect Georg Wickop . The building contained rooms for electrical engineering , mechanical engineering and the material testing institute . The extension is connected by a staircase to the old main building of the university and complements its west wing to the south.
The middle part of the west facade is emphasized by a semicircular, protruding bay window on the upper floors . The bay window has been raised above the eaves and is closed off with a balustrade at the top. The building sculpture consists of yellow sandstone . The brickwork is lightly plastered .
The preserved wooden entrance portal is integrated into the rusting base area ; Its architrave-like crown made of yellow sandstone is dominated by a carved woman's head, which arises from garlands hanging over four small windows on both sides . The first floor is highlighted by window crowns and decorated parapet areas . The window frames are also made of yellow sandstone. The massive looking structure has a slate roof.
The building was damaged in an air raid in 1944. It was restored in the post-war period.
