Architecture and history
The old main building of the Technical University of Darmstadt in the years 1893 bis 1895 after plans of the architecture - Professor Heinrich Wagner built. The building with two wings is strictly symmetrical. It is divided vertically by a central and corner projections . Because of the layout of the building site, the symmetry is slightly disturbed by the shorter east wing. The group of figures was made according to a design by the Stuttgart sculptor Bausch. The central figure represents the Minerva , a laurel holding, on a throne is to the right of which is Minerva. The structure was partially destroyed in an air raid in 1944. After the war, the north and the east wing of the building was a basement increased . The western side wing was almost completely destroyed; it was replaced by a new building. The building is crowned by a slate roof.
Only a few parts of the old interior have been preserved: the patterned terrazzo floors and the main staircase with granite steps , as well as columns and cast-iron railings .
