The Erzbistum Beira ( latin Archidioecesis Beirensis ) is in Mozambique preferred Roman Catholic Archdiocese based in Beira . It covers the entire province of Sofala .
history
Pope Pius XII founded the diocese of Beira with the Apostolic Constitution Sollemnibus Conventionibus on September 4, 1940 from cession of territory of the Archdiocese of Lourenço Marques , to which it was also subordinated as a suffragan. With the Bull Quo efficacius on June 4, 1984 it was raised to the rank of Metropolitan Archbishopric .
It lost parts of its territory in favor of the establishment of the following dioceses:
- October 6, 1954 to the Quelimane diocese ;
- May 6, 1962 to the diocese of Tete ;
- November 19, 1990 to the Diocese of Chimoio .
