Ernesto Gonçalves da Costa

Ernesto Gonçalves da Costa OFM (born August 13, 1921 in São Romão de Ucha; † January 7, 2002 ) was Bishop of Faro .

Life

Ernesto Gonçalves da Costa joined the order of the Franciscans and was ordained a priest on July 25, 1946 .

John XXIII appointed him Bishop of Inhambane on October 27, 1962 . The Archbishop of Lourenço Marques , Custódio Alvim Pereira , donated him episcopal ordination on December 30th of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Manuel de Medeiros Guerreiro , Bishop of Nampula , and José dos Santos Garcia SMP , Bishop of Porto Amélia .

He participated in the second to fourth session of the Second Vatican Council . The Pope appointed him Apostolic Administrator of Lourenço Marques on August 27, 1974 . On December 23, 1974, he was appointed Bishop of Beira . He was appointed Apostolic Administrator of Inhambane on January 18, 1975. He resigned from his office as Apostolic Administrator of Lourenço Marques on March 9, 1975. He resigned from his position as Apostolic Administrator of Inhambane on February 8, 1976. He resigned from his office as Bishop of Beira on December 3, 1976. Paul VI appointed him Bishop of Faro on April 4, 1977 . He resigned from this office on April 21, 1988.
