The Erzbistum Maputo ( lat. : Archidioecesis Maputensis ) is in Mozambique preferred Roman Catholic Archdiocese based in Maputo .
history
The Archdiocese of Maputo was established on January 21, 1612 by Pope Paul V with the Apostolic Constitution In supereminenti from cession of territory from the Diocese of Goa as the Apostolic Administration of Mozambique . The Apostolic Administration Mozambique was in 1783 by Pope Pius VI. elevated to a territorial prelature . On September 4, 1940, the Territorial Prelature gave Mozambique parts of its territory to establish the dioceses of Beira and Nampula .
The Territorial Prelature Mozambique was on September 4, 1940 by Pope Pius XII. with the Apostolic Constitution Sollemnibus Conventionibus raised to the Archdiocese and renamed the Archdiocese of Lourenço Marques . The Archdiocese of Lourenço Marques gave up on August 3, 1962 parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of Inhambane . Another cession took place on June 19, 1970 to found the Diocese of João Belo . On September 18, 1976, the Archdiocese of Lourenço Marques was renamed the Archdiocese of Maputo .
