Alexandre José Maria dos Santos
Alexandre José Maria Cardinal dos Santos OFM (born March 18, 1924 in Zavala , Mozambique ) is retired Archbishop of Maputo .
Life
Alexandre José Maria dos Santos studied in Malawi and Portugal trays Catholic theology and philosophy . He entered the Franciscan order , and received on 25 June 1953, the sacrament of Holy Orders .
From 1954 to 1972 he worked as a pastor in the Franciscan Mission in Inhabane , from 1972 to 1974 he was Regens head of the boys' seminary in Vila Pery .
On December 23, 1974, Pope Paul VI appointed him . to the Archbishop of Lourenço Marques (Maputo) . The episcopal ordination donated him to the Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples , Agnelo Rossi , on March 9, 1975; Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Dar es Salaam , Cardinal Laurean Rugambwa , and the Bishop of Malanje , Eduardo André Muaca . Pope John Paul II accepted him on June 28, 1988 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Frumenzio ai Prati Fiscali in the college of cardinals .
On February 22, 2003, Pope John Paul II accepted Alexandre José Maria dos Santos's request to resign from the office of Archbishop of Maputo for reasons of age.
