Titular Archdiocese of Caesarea in Palestine

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Caesarea in Palestine ( Italian Cesarea di Palestina ) is a titular archbishopric of the Roman Catholic Church .

It goes back to a lost bishop's seat in the ancient city of Caesarea Maritima in the Roman province of Syria Palaestina or Palaestina Prima .

Caesarea also exists in Palestina dei Greco-Melkiti as the titular archbishopric of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church .

history

The city was a Christian bishopric at an early stage. The biblical place of Caesarea has been forgotten by many Christians in the West. The pilgrims' house in the city is not only important for local Christians: it is believed that the apostle Peter stayed in the city.

During the time of the Crusaders the Latin hierarchy was established and the Archdiocese of Caesarea was founded in 1101. As part of the conquest, depopulation and destruction of Caesarea by the Egyptian Mamluks in 1275, the metropolis finally went under and became the titular archbishopric of the Roman Catholic Church - nomen "de curia": Cesarea di Palestine .

The Patriarchs of Jerusalem were previously usually Archbishops of Tire or Caesarea. One of the archbishops of Caesarea who became patriarch was Heraclius .

Ecclesiastical province

The suffragan dioceses belonged to the ecclesiastical province:
