The Ore Mountains Subprovince (Czech Krušnohorská subprovincie ), formerly also known as the Ore Mountains System or the Ore Mountains System , is a subdivision of the geomorphological division of the Czech Republic . The area is located in the northwest of the Czech Republic and borders on Bavaria , Thuringia and Saxony . The unit is one of the six sub-provinces of the Bohemian Massif ( Česká vysočina ), which in turn is part of the Hercynian system .

Position and extent

The highest part of the sub-province is formed by the Ore Mountains with the Klínovec as the highest point. While the German side has only a slight gradient, the Ore Mountains drop steeply to the south into the Eger Basin with the North Bohemian Basin . The Fichtel Mountains (Smrčiny) form the western edge . The eastern edge of the sub-province in Bohemian Switzerland is covered by Cretaceous sandstones . Tertiary igneous rocks emerge in the Egergraben as well as in the Bohemian Central Mountains (České středohoří) .
