geography
It is a zone of depressions and volcanic hilly landscapes formed by tectonic movements in the Tertiary and extends over a length of about 175 km from southwest to northeast, from Cheb to Česká Lípa . In the northwest there is a steep ascent to the Ore Mountains, in the southern highlands and in the east of the Česká tabule it is rather hilly.
Especially in the western part, because of the frequent outbreaks of carbon dioxide along the fault lines at that time, many mineral springs were created ( Franzensbad , Karlsbad ). The basin also contains many deposits of brown coal, which is mined here. Thanks to these natural resources (baths and coal mining with downstream industry) the area is relatively densely populated. There are a number of cities: Cheb , Sokolov , Karlovy Vary , Kadaň , Chomutov , Most , Teplice , Ústí nad Labem and more.
The Eger , a left tributary of the Elbe, flows through the greater part of the region . The Elbe itself breaks through the Bohemian Central Uplands near Ústí nad Labem . The other tributaries of the Elbe (e.g. Bílina and Ploučnice ) drain the northern part of the region. The southern part of Doupovské hory belongs to the Střela basin and through Berounka and Vltava back to the Elbe catchment area.
