Position and extent
The highest part of the sub-province is formed by the Ore Mountains with the Klínovec as the highest point. While the German side has only a slight gradient, the Ore Mountains drop steeply to the south into the Eger Basin with the North Bohemian Basin . The Fichtel Mountains (Smrčiny) form the western edge . The eastern edge of the sub-province in Bohemian Switzerland is covered by Cretaceous sandstones . Tertiary igneous rocks emerge in the Egergraben as well as in the Bohemian Central Mountains (České středohoří) .
The neighboring sub-provinces are clockwise from east to west:
- Sudeten Subprovincie (Krkonošsko-jesenická subprovincie)
- Bohemian table country (Česká tabule)
- Beraun subprovincie (Poberounská subprovincie)
- Bohemian Forest Subprovincie (Šumavská subprovincie)
