Esa Kustaa Ruuttunen (born March 11, 1950 in Nivala ) is a Finnish opera singer ( baritone ).

Life

Ruuttunen studied singing and music at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki from 1974 to 1980 . At the same time he completed a degree in theology. From 1974 he was employed as a vicar in the Temppeliaukio Church in Helsinki. From August 1984 he concentrated only on his work as a singer and accepted a teaching position at the Sibelius Academy. Master classes with Rudolf Bautz and Ralph Gothóni followed.

A second place in 1981 at the international singing competition Concours de Genève made him known internationally. He then performed numerous recitals with the Finnish pianist Marita Viitasalo-Pohjola, among others in Sweden, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, the USA, Korea and Estonia. His repertoire included above all the song cycles by Franz Schubert and Johannes Brahms , Finnish and Scandinavian songs and contemporary song compositions.

Ruuttunen had appearances at numerous important opera houses, including the Finnish National Opera in Helsinki, the Tampere Theater (including 1991 as Klingsor in Parsifal ) and from 1987 to 2005 at the Savonlinna Opera Festival . With the Helsinki Opera Ensemble, he gave guest appearances at the Aalto Theater in Essen in 1989 in the Finnish opera Juha by Aarre Merikanto , in 1990 in the Estonia National Opera in Tallinn as Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor and in 1992 in Los Angeles in the world premiere of the opera Kullervo by Aulis Sallinen . He also worked with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra, among others .

Ruuttunen's repertoire includes, among others, the Monterone in Verdi's Rigoletto , the Escamillo in Bizet's Carmen , the Valentin in Gounod's Faust , the Scarpia in Puccini's Tosca , the Pizarro in Beethoven's Fidelio , the Herr Fluth in Nicolai's Lustigen Weibern von Windsor , the Alberich in Wagner's Rheingold and roles in Finnish operas (including appearing as a judge in Pohjalaisia by Leeri Madetoja in 1992 ). In 1995 Ruuttunen took part in the premiere of the opera Das Buch Jonah by Olli Kortekangas in Helsinki in the title role. In 1996 he appeared at the Savonlinna Opera Festival in the title role in The Flying Dutchman . In 2004/2005 he sang the title role in the opera Oedipe by George Enescu at the Vienna State Opera .
