The Esperanza del Mar [ espeˈɾanθa del maɾ ] ( Spanish for "hope of the sea"), callsign "EBUQ", is a hospital ship owned by the Instituto Social de la Marina (ISM), which is responsible for the medical care of the Spanish Ministry of Labor Member of the Spanish fishing fleet is directly responsible at sea. The ship was put into service in 2001 and is mainly used on the West African Atlantic coast . It is one of the largest hospital ships in use worldwide and probably the largest that was built specifically for this purpose from the start and is not based on the conversion of another type of ship.

history

The Esperanza del Mar ran in October 2001 from the pile and took mid-November, the regular operation. It replaced its predecessor ship of the same name, which was built as a container freighter in 1977 and converted into a hospital ship in 1982. In contrast, the starting point for the design of the new ship was to design a floating hospital from scratch . The ship was built by the company Juliana Constructora Gijonesa SA in Gijón . The construction costs amounted to around 21 million euros, of which around 20 percent came from subsidies from the European Union . The home port is Las Palmas de Gran Canaria .

In the 25 years between 1982 and 2007 , around 27,500 sick or injured people were cared for on both ships, which were in service under the name Esperanza del Mar at that time . Around 1,300 people were rescued from distress at sea , including around 500 African refugees. The crew provided logistical assistance around 8,000 times for a total of around 3,300 ships. In 2006, under the name Juan de la Cosa, a smaller sister ship of the Esperanza del Mar was put into service, which is mainly in use northwest of the Iberian Peninsula in the North Atlantic .

Furnishing

The Esperanza del Mar is based on a reinforced hull and is 97.34 meters long and 17.7 meters wide. She reaches a top speed of around 17  knots . On board are, among other things, an operating room , an intensive care unit , an X-ray station , a pharmacy , a special station for treating burn victims , a quarantine station , a station for the mentally ill , a cold room and a helicopter landing pad . The equipment also includes various devices for technical assistance, including towing and fire-fighting technology , oil barriers and oil suction devices as well as devices for underwater repairs. For rescue operations, the Esperanza del Mar is equipped with a daughter boat that can accommodate 17 people in need and three crew members and reaches a speed of 32 knots, and various other lifeboats and five life rafts for a total of 60 people.

On the ship, a maximum of 17 sick or injured people can be accommodated in the sick area and up to 30 castaways in a special care area. Both areas are largely isolated from the rest of the ship. The crew, including the medical staff, which consists of two teams of two doctors and one nurse each, comprises a total of 41 people. In addition to marine radio contact and a telephone and fax connection , the ship also offers the option of communicating with appropriately equipped ships via a satellite-based video conference system. Technical support from specialists on land is possible via the same system.

operation area

The main area of application of the Esperanza Del Mar is the Atlantic along the West African coast between Morocco or Mauritania and Ghana . Around 300 Spanish ships with a total of around 5,000 crew members are in action here during the fishing season.
