The EC São Bento is a football club from Mogi Mirim in the Brazilian state of São Paulo . The club was founded in 1913.

history

founding

At the beginning of the 20th century, there were already some football clubs in Sorocaba, including SC Savóia , SC Sorocabano and Fortaleza Clube . In Barrio Além Ponte, a place where many families lived Spanish immigrants, was born in 1905 the Club Athletico Chapeiros . The club was sponsored by the hat manufacturer Souza Pereira. He died in 1913 in the course of a yellow fever epidemic and the club went out. Because of this, on September 14, 1913, former members of the club and employees of the Ferreira e Cia factory joined forces and founded the Sorocaba Athletic Club .

Just one month later, the club was renamed Esporte Clube São Bento. According to the club history information on the São Bento website, there are two theories about the new name. One assumption is based on the fact that the club referred to the then successful club AA São Bento , which also wore the club colors blue and white. Another that the club trained at the back of the São Bento Monastery in the city.
