Etidronic acid or etidronate is a chemical compound from the group of bisphosphonates . Etidronic acid was patented by Procter & Gamble in 1968 . It was used as a drug against bone loss. The disodium salt is used in medicines.

presentation

Etidronic acid can be prepared by reacting phosphorus trichloride with acetic acid in the presence of a tertiary amine .

The reaction of a mixture of acetic acid / acetic anhydride and phosphonic acid is also possible .

properties

Etidronic acid is a tetrabasic acid with the pKa values 1.35 ± 0.08; 2.87; 7.03 ± 0.01; 11.3. Their refractive index is 1.44–1.46.

use

Etidronic acid was marketed in Germany until August 2008 under the name Didronel as a drug against bone loss in Paget's disease . Etidronate is also used in detergents to soften water .

safety instructions

The compound is flammable and hazardous to water. As with all bisphosphonates, side effects can occur.
